Reinforced Concrete Basement and Super-Structure Works

Project key points

Sub-structure:

  • The sub-structure works consisted of the underpinning and construction of basement slabs, walls and columns and ground level slabs within three existing buildings, along with the construction of two new buildings at either end

  • The three existing buildings had a substantial amount of temporary works to be installed, both to the inside and outside of each building before 3m deep excavations were cast in two stages to their perimeters. Once the entire perimeter of underpins were cast, excavations could begin whilst working around existing propping

Super-structure:

  • The super-structure works involved the construction of ten high level interior concrete slabs cast on metal decking supported by steel columns

  • The other bulk of works involved constructing an architectural feature wall with balconies extending three floors in height using air-entrained concrete and a specialised ply for formwork
